Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde

1 book

Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was a brilliant Irish playwright, novelist, and poet who became the defining voice of late-Victorian wit and the Aesthetic Movement. Renowned for his flamboyant style and advocacy for "art for art's sake," Wilde captivated London society with his sharp social commentary and sparkling conversation. His literary genius peaked in the 1890s with his dark psychological masterpiece, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and a string of immensely successful satirical plays, most notably The Importance of Being Earnest. However, at the height of his theatrical fame, Wilde's life took a tragic turn when he was convicted of "gross indecency" under Britain's anti-homosexuality laws. Sentenced to two years of brutal hard labor, his health and spirit were permanently broken. Following his release in 1897, bankrupt and socially exiled, Wilde spent his remaining years in Europe under an assumed name, eventually dying penniless of meningitis in Paris at the age of 46. Today, he is celebrated not only as a tragic victim of Victorian intolerance but as one of history’s greatest wits, a master of comedic satire, and an enduring icon of modern literature.
